Icelandic Contemporary Design

By Elisabet V. Ingvarsdottir

Furniture – Product design – Architecture

Elísabet V. Ingvarsdóttir

Icelandic design has in a fairly brief period of time changed from being an underdog to becoming a shooting star among Icelandic trade. In the past few years the Icelandic people have discovered that local design is one of the things that create a singularity for Iceland as a nation. Through the designer´s creativity the nation has been able to reinforce its roots and values. With the book Icelandic Contemporary Design an overview of recent works of Icelandic designers is for the first time displayed in one place. The design pieces chosen for this publication provide a kaleidoscopic view of the work of contemporary Icelandic designers, ranging from avalanche barriers in remote Siglufjörður to bar interiors in Hong Kong.

Icelandic Contemporary Design is published in co-operation with Iceland Design Centre and was created in connection with the traveling exhibition Icelandic Contemporary Design: Furniture, Product Design, Architecture, which was originally the summer exhibition, Icelandic Design 2009, at the Reykjavík Art Museum at Kjarvalsstaðir and was part of the Reykjavík Arts Festival in 2009. Elísabet V. Ingvarsdóttir, curator and author of the book, has studied the history and development of Icelandic design for many years.
